Type Locality and Naming

The type section is located in the Shikebutai area of the Xinyuan County, Xinjiang; and the reference section is situated in the area extending from the upper reaches of the Tomorlog to the east of the Tiemeilike of the Xinyuan County, Xinjiang. It was named by He Mingyu in 1953, and was issued (1983) by Zhang Zhimin, Wu Shaozu.


Lithology and Thickness

Volcanics. Its Lower part is composed of brown-purple andesite, andesitic rhyolite, andesitic porphyrite, trachyte, yellow-brown coarse-grained sandstone sandy conglomerate and clayey sandstone. Its Upper part is composed of grey-brown, purple-brown and grey-green andesitic tuff, amygdaloidal andesite and andesitic agglomerate, intercalated with fine-grained sandstone. Visible thickness is 3455 m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Uncertain. No base of the formation has been found. Next older unit on chart is the upper Carboniferous Keguqinshan Fm

Upper contact

Unconformable contact with the overlying Tomorlog Fm of the Upper Permian Series

Regional extent

Distributed in the eastern end of the Awulale Mt., the Tekeming Mt. to the south of the Ili Basin, the Ishkilike Mt., the Jiaonur Mt. and in the surrounding area of the Zhaosu-Tekes Basin, Xinjiang.
